ক্যামেরার পাঠশালা,
ক্যামেরায় ছবি তুলতে হলে জানতে হবে আলোকচিত্রের নানা কৌশল। আর এই কৌশল শেখানোর একটি প্রতিষ্ঠানের নাম পাঠশালা। পুরো নাম ‘দ্য সাউথ এশিয়ান ইনস্টিটিউট অব ফটোগ্রাফি।’ ১৯৯৮ সালে পান্থপথ আর কলাবাগান সংযোগ সড়কের কাছাকাছি ১৬ শুক্রাবাদ বাড়িটির উঠোনে আমগাছের নিচে প্রখ্যাত আলোকচিত্রী শহিদুল আলমের কাছে কয়েকজন আলোকচিত্রপ্রেমী ছবি তোলা শেখার আগ্রহ প্রকাশ করেন। এরপর তাঁদের নিয়েই শুরু হয় পাঠশালার প্রথম পর্ব। সময়ও ঢের গড়িয়েছে। শুক্রাবাদের সেই আমতলা ছাড়িয়ে এখন তাঁরা শেখে একতলা বাড়িটি জুড়ে থাকা শ্রেণীকক্ষ, লাইব্রেরি ও ডার্করুমে। পরিসর বেড়েছে, বেড়েছে শিক্ষার্থী। পাঠশালা হতে পারে আলোকচিত্র শিক্ষার অন্যতম সহায়ক। কিন্তু কীভাবে আপনি যোগাযোগ করবেন তাঁদের সঙ্গে আর কীভাবে জানবেন আলোকচিত্রের ওপর কী কী কোর্স আছে এখানে? জেনে নেওয়া যাক এবার সেই সম্পর্কে—পাঠশালা একজন আলোকচিত্রীকে বিভিন্ন কোর্সে অংশ নেওয়ার সুযোগ করে দিচ্ছে। যদি কেউ কেবল শখের বশে শিখতে চান তবে করে নিতে পারেন এখানের চার সপ্তাহের বেসিক ফটোগ্রাফি কোর্সটি।
যে কেউ এই কোর্সে তিন হাজার টাকার বিনিময়ে অংশ নিতে পারবেন। আরও আছে আট সপ্তাহের ফাউন্ডেশন কোর্স, যার খরচ পড়বে সাড়ে পাঁচ হাজার টাকা। এ তো গেল সংক্ষিপ্ত কোর্সের কথা। আলোকচিত্রী হওয়াটা যাঁদের নেশা তাঁরা এটাকে পেশায় পরিণত করে নিতে পারেন এক বছরের প্রোগ্রাম ইন ফটোগ্রাফি। তবে এখানে রয়েছে শিক্ষাগত যোগ্যতার বাধ্যবাধকতা। এসএসসি ও এইচএসসিতে কিংবা এ লেভেলে ২.৫ কিংবা দ্বিতীয় শ্রেণী অর্জন করা শিক্ষার্থীরা অংশ নিতে পারবেন। দুই সেমিস্টারের এই কোর্সটির ফি পড়বে ৪৫ হাজার টাকা। আরও কিছু শর্ত আছে। অবশ্যই শিক্ষার্থীকে বেসিক ফটোগ্রাফি কোর্স করা থাকতে হবে। আর প্রকাশনা কিংবা অভিজ্ঞতা থাকলে অবশ্যই তা বাড়তি যোগ্যতা হিসেবে বিবেচিত হবে। পাঠশালায় দুই ও তিন বছরের অ্যাডভান্সড ও স্নাতক ফটোগ্রাফি কোর্সও করে নিতে পারেন যে কেউ। এ ছাড়া এখানে নতুনভাবে যুক্ত হয়েছে ছয় সপ্তাহের ভিডিওগ্রাফির বেসিক কোর্স। এর ফি পড়বে তিন হাজার টাকা।আলোকচিত্রের বেসিক কোর্স করার সময় যদি কোনো যন্ত্রপাতির প্রয়োজন হয় তার সবই সরবরাহ করবে পাঠশালা। তবে বাকিগুলোতে নিজেই নিজের যন্ত্রপাতির ব্যয় বহন করতে হবে। সবার জন্যই পাঠশালার লাইব্রেরি ব্যবহারের সুযোগ রয়েছে। আলোকচিত্রের ওপর দেশ-বিদেশের বিখ্যাত বই পাওয়া যাবে এখানে। মৌলিক কোর্স ছাড়া অন্যান্য কোর্সের শিক্ষার্থীরা ডার্করুম, ল্যাবরুম ব্যবহারের সুযোগ পাবেন। এর জন্য বাড়তি কোনো ফি দিতে হবে না। কেউ যদি এখানকার ফি একটু বেশি বলে মনে করেন তবে জেনে রাখা ভালো, পাঠশালায় প্রশিক্ষণ করাতে অনেক সময় বিদেশের প্রখ্যাত আলোকচিত্রশিল্পীরা আসেন। তাঁদের খরচও কিন্তু কম নয়, সে তুলনায় নেহাত অল্প বলেই মনে করে কর্তৃপক্ষ। ছবি তোলা শিখতে কেন শিক্ষার্থীরা এখানে আসবেন? এ প্রশ্নের জবাবে পাঠশালার প্রশাসনিক কর্মকর্তা যোসেফ রোজারিও বলেন, ‘এখানে যাঁরা শেখান, তাঁদের সবাই আলোকচিত্র পেশার সঙ্গে সম্পর্কযুক্ত। শিক্ষকেরা শিক্ষার্থীদের প্রতি আলাদা যত্ন নেন। আর এখানে একান্তভাবেই চাওয়া হয় যেন শিক্ষার্থীরা শিক্ষকদের কাছ থেকে কিছু শিখতে পারেন।’পাঠশালা সম্প্রতি ভিন্ন উদ্যোগ নিয়েছে তার শিক্ষার্থীদের জন্য। অসলো ইউনিভার্সিটি কলেজের সঙ্গে ২০০৩ সাল থেকে শুরু হওয়া চুক্তি অনুযায়ী অসলোর শিক্ষার্থীরা বাংলাদেশে আর বাংলাদেশের আলোকচিত্রীরা অসলোতে যাবে। এ ছাড়া এডিথকোয়েন ইউনিভার্সিটি পার্থ অস্ট্রেলিয়ার সঙ্গেও ২০০৮ সাল থেকে শুরু হয়েছে ছাত্রদের অদলবদলের প্রথা। এক দেশের আলোকচিত্রী অন্য দেশে গিয়ে সেই বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় কিংবা প্রতিষ্ঠানের নেতৃত্বে আলোকচিত্রের নানা বিষয়ে আলোচনা করেন। এ ছাড়া পাঠশালা, দ্য সাউথ এশিয়ান ইনস্টিটিউট অব ফটোগ্রাফির যেকোনো শিক্ষার্থী যদি আলোকচিত্র বিষয়ে উচ্চশিক্ষা গ্রহণ করতে চান, তবে এই দুই বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় ছাড়াও ডেনিশ স্কুল অব জার্নালিজম, ডেনমার্ক ও সান্ডারল্যান্ড ও বোল্টন ইউনিভার্সিটিতে পড়াশোনা করতে পারবেন।পাঠশালায় যাঁরা প্রশিক্ষণ দিচ্ছেন তাঁরাও দেশের প্রথিতযশা আলোকচিত্রশিল্পী। ফলে এখান থেকে কিছু না শিখে অন্তত যেতে হবে না। শুধু ঢাকায় নয়, সিলেটে ও চট্টগ্রামেও ছড়িয়েছে পাঠশালার শাখা। চট্টগ্রামে যাঁরা ছবি তোলার কলাকৌশল শিখতে চান তাঁরা যোগাযোগ করতে পারেন ওয়াইএমসিএ বিল্ডিং, বাড়ি নম্বর ৯৫০/ই, সিডিএ এভিনিউ, পূর্ব নাসিরাবাদ, চট্টগ্রাম। প্রয়োজনে ০১৭১৫৪৮৭৫৭৫। এ ছাড়া সিলেটের আগ্রহীরা যোগাযোগ করতে পারেন স্টুডিও মডেল, রাজা বিপণি, জিন্দাবাজার, সিলেট। প্রয়োজনে-০১৭১১৩৭৬৭৮৪।আগামী চার বছরের মধ্যে পরিবর্তন হতে পারে পাঠশালার নাম আর ভবন। নতুন নাম হবে ‘দ্য সাউথ এশিয়ান মিডিয়া একাডেমি অ্যান্ড ইনস্টিটিউট অব ফটোগ্রাফি।’ এই প্রতিষ্ঠান দক্ষিণ এশিয়ার সেরা আলোকচিত্র শিক্ষাপ্রতিষ্ঠানের স্বপ্ন নিয়ে এগিয়ে যাচ্ছে। কিছুটা স্বপ্ন পূরণও হয়েছে বটে, প্রতি দুই বছর অন্তর আয়োজিত ছবিমেলার মধ্য দিয়ে। যে মেলায় হাট বসে বিশ্বের নানা দেশের আলোকচিত্রীর। যে কেউ আলোকচিত্রী হওয়ার স্বপ্ন নিয়ে এগিয়ে যেতে পার এই পথে। লক্ষ পূরণে পাঠশালা সহযোগিতা করবে তরুণদের।

He advises photographers and syndication agencies on all aspects of copyright law, and regularly lectures and gives seminars in the UK and overseas on aspect of media law.

We have arranged a discussion about ‘Copy-right Jam Session (question and answer)’ for you on Thursday, the 18th of February 2010 at 5.00pm at Pathshala which will be led by Rupert Grey.

We request you all to do some home about copy-right or related issues: - eg about contracts, what rights you should release, some concrete examples of eg infringements: it would be helpful to have some stories of things that went wrong.

The Magnum Scholarship in USA

The Magnum Foundation is pleased to announce that three scholarships are available for the 2010 New York University/Magnum Foundation Photography and Human Rights Program.

The funding covers the 6-week program at the Tisch School of the Arts at NYU, housing, travel, and expenses. Two scholarships also include a 4-week internship at a magazine, non-profit or photo agency in New York, and the third includes a similar internship in London.

As described below, one scholarship is for applicants from the Indian sub-continent. The other two scholarships are open to applicants from any of the following regions: Latin America, the Caucasus region, Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union, East Asia, Africa or the Middle East.

Support for these scholarships has generously been provided by the Magnum Charitable Trust (UK), the Open Society Institute, and the Magnum Foundation.

About the Program

Tisch School of the Arts, in partnership with the Magnum Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting documentary photography, recently created the certificate program in Photography and Human Rights. The new initiative is designed to explore strategies to create effective documentary projects linked with issues of human rights. The program begins in May 2010.
“We are delighted to be able to partner with the Magnum Foundation to offer this important new program,” said Mary Schmidt Campbell, dean of the Tisch School of the Arts. “The roleof photography in the global struggle for basic human rights has never been more important than it is today. This program’s emphasis will be on the relevance of human rights law to documentary work, and how the photographer can develop projects that aid in the attainment of those basic rights.”
The program is aimed at intermediate and advanced students, including experienced professionals, who seek to hone their documentary and media skills in the context of human rights. Students will be taught to utilize a variety of media approaches while emphasizing new digital possibilities to create maximum social impact.
Faculty for the program will include: Magnum photographer Susan Meiselas, adjunct professor and human rights specialist Peter Lucas, photography and technical specialist Cate Fallon, and program director and acting chair of Photography & Imaging, Fred Ritchin, among others.

About the Scholarship Application Process

Dear All,
We are pleased to inform you that the collaborative programme between Oslo University College (OUC), Norway, Photo.Circle, Nepal, Photo Bank, Chittagong and Pathshala-South Asian Institute of Photography, Dhaka has started from January 11, 2010. Under this programme, a group of students from OUC is collaborating with the fellow students from Photo.Circle, Nepal, Photo Bank, Chittagong and Pathshala, Dhaka for the first time. Students work on their personal projects as part of their curriculum and produce comprehensive photo-stories at the end. This programme is being sponsored by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Norway.

Under this programme, a group of twelve students from OUC, seventeen students from Pathshala, eight from Nepal and eight from Chittagong through Photo Bank in Chittagong are collaborating in this year. Students worked in two groups in two different venues-one in Nepal and the other one in Chittagong. Both the groups had workshops in Nepal and Chittagong from January 11-15, 2010 separately. The workshop in Nepal was conducted by Philip Blenkinsop and in Chittagong by Stuart Freedman. Students then worked on their personal projects from January 16 to February 5, 2010. The group in Nepal had a local presentation in Nepal on the 6th February and the Chittagong group on the 7th February. All participating students will come to Dhaka for their final presentation. The presentation schedule is given below:

This 6-week program is made up of 4 intensive evening courses, intended for intermediate and advanced students, including experienced professionals, who seek to hone their documentary and media skills in the context of human rights. The assumption is that all students will be relatively fluent with the use of a camera to produce photographs but will benefit from work on developing a visual essay for both conventional and digital media, using video, sound and interactive techniques to enhance the power of the imagery. A major emphasis of the program will be on the relevance of human rights law to the documentary work, and strategizing projects that aid in the attainment of such basic rights. Guest lecturers for the program will include many documentary photographers, editors, and critics.

Students are encouraged to take all four courses, but the courses can be taken in any combination that works for the student. Courses can be taken for credit or non-credit. Registration begins February 8th. For registration and housing information, please consult nyu.edu/summer.

THE PICTURE ESSAY FOR PAPER AND PIXEL (2 credit lecture)

This course will focus on the long-term photographic essay. It will look at both linear and non-linear forms of the essay, with and without the use of text, sound, video and other media. Intent, ethics, grammar and presentation issues will be considered. There will be many references to a variety of historical models from magazines, newspapers, books, exhibitions and digital environments, including the Web.

DIGITAL TOOLS FOR DOCUMENTARY PRACTICE (2 credit studio)

The class will explore tools that are useful for a documentary photographer, relating to the digital camera, as well as to image capture, preservation, presentation and transmission. Lighting, audio interviewing, and the production of short videos will also be covered at a basic level. Students work on several small assignments to experiment with software and hardware, and will have the opportunity to complete a small project of their own. This course is intended to give students a fundamental understanding of the efficiencies and possibilities of the digital realm.

Catherine Fallon is the former Digital master printer for Gilles Peress. She has had residencies at the Banff Centre for the Arts, Banff, Canada; the MacDowell Colony; and the Ucross Foundation. Her photographic work has been exhibited at A.I.R. Gallery, New York; Blue Sky Oregon Center for the Photographic Arts, Portland, Oregon; City Gallery, New York; and Soho 20, New York.

JUNE 7 – JUNE 25

HUMAN RIGHTS AND PHOTOGRAPHY (2 credit lecture)

This class will focus on photography, representation, and human rights. Specifically, we will examine the crucial role that photography plays in the global human rights movement. Many photographers who once considered themselves to be working within a documentary tradition now conceive of themselves as also working within a human rights framework. In order to understand this change, we need to view the many historical and contemporary movements related to documentary photography. We will also explore critical issues surrounding the ethics and politics of photographic representation and the different mediums (such as traditional print media versus new media) used to express human rights issues. We will also carefully place photography and visual representation within the wider field of human rights. And finally, we will study the impact photography has had on social change and the many possibilities photographs may have in the future struggle for universal human rights.

Peter Lucas has taught at Columbia University as a lecturer of peace education in the Department of International and Transcultural Studies at Teachers College, at The New School, Bogazici University, and Istanbul University. His research and teaching focuses on international studies in human rights, human rights and photography, human rights and media, the poetics of witnessing, peace education, and human rights education and documentary practice.

THE PHOTO ESSAY (2 credit studio)

This is an advanced course that concentrates on creating photo essays in the context of human rights. Students will photograph, edit, sequence and present a photographic essay that they produce during the course, using allied media when useful; they will also read essential human rights literature and discuss in class its importance in pursuing the photo essay. Issues in effective fieldwork will be discussed, both strategic and ethical. The class will also consider the potential usefulness of such documentary projects and how to target work for greater social impact.

Susan Meiselas (www.susanmeiselas.com) received her B.A. from Sarah Lawrence College and her M.A. in visual education from Harvard University. She is well -known for her coverage of the insurrection in Nicaragua and her documentation of human rights issues in Latin America, including the El Mozote massacre in El Salvador.

Journalist Brian Palmer followed young U.S. Marines on dozens of missions during three embeds in Iraq between 2004 and 2006. Back in the States, he continued to document the war and its human cost. Full Disclosure captures the consistent, sometimes benign, but often tragic miscommunication between U.S. troops and vulnerable Iraqi citizens. Amid the inexorable and destructive momentum of the occupation, the documentary explores the consequences of our inability to speak with and understand those whose country we occupy. It exposes the gap between what we think we’re doing in Iraq and what we’re actually doing.
Iraq was the war five years ago when Palmer started Full Disclosure. Afghanistan was “the forgotten war.” The opposite may be true in 2010, but even as Americans turn toward “AfPak” and Yemen, the discord and damage in Iraq remain.

Brian Palmer is an independent journalist, photographer, and filmmaker based in Brooklyn, NY. In 2009, he completed Full Disclosure, for which he received grants from the Ford Foundation and Applied Research Center. Palmer has written for Mother Jones, The Huffington Post, Pixel Press.org, ColorLines, Foam (Amsterdam), Independent World Report (Stockholm) among others. He is a Fellow at New York University Law School’s Center on Law and Security and a faculty member in the MFA Photography, Video, and Related Media Program at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. From 2000 to 2002 he was an on-air correspondent at CNN. Prior to that, he was a staff writer at Fortune and Beijing Bureau Chief for US News & World Report. Palmer began his career in journalism in 1988 at The Village Voice newspaper.

Hope you are all aware about the present situation of Pathshala and ULAB
collaboration. We inform you that Pathshala@ULAB collaboration chapter is
closed and all classes under this programme are cancelled with effect from
17th of July 2008. We are extremely sorry for all the trouble that you
went through because of this initiative during last several months.

We inform you that Pathshala will keep running its all previous programmes
in its campus at Panthapath. The new academic year 2008-2009 will start
from the 3rd of August 2008. The admission formalities to be completed
during the office hour from July 23-29, 2008.

The total tuition fee for 2nd and 3rd year students is Taka thirty-two
thousand (Tk.32, 000/=) only. You will have to pay one-third percent of

Roland is currently working with the Regional CII – (Consumer Imaging & Information Division), Pro Business Development Department, Canon Singapore Pte Ltd. He is responsible for the development of professional DSLR camera business in South and Southeast Asia region. He has extensive experience in conducting training, seminars and workshops for Professional photographers and sales companies’ personnel. He is always present at major sponsorships and events when Canon provides support for Professional photographers. He was recently seen supporting the photographers in the SEA games held in Thailand.

Extensive Technical Background: In 1986, Roland joined Canon Marketing Services as a supervisor in Camera/Video after-sales-service department. He was soon promoted to a Manager to oversee the Camera/Video servicing department, supported by a group of engineers and technicians. In 1996, he was transferred to the Regional Camera/Video as service manager, taking care of 17 countries’ after-sales-service and operations. He had conducted numerous technical trainings as well as setting up after-sales-service workshops in this region.

During his 22 years of in Canon Singapore Pte. Ltd., Roland has received numerous trainings in Canon Inc., Tokyo. He has conducted many trainings, seminars and workshops, as well as working closely with press and professional photographers in the region covering Singapore, Malaysia, India, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Nepal and Brunei. Roland’s extensive technical experience is invaluable support to the DSLR marketing group in Canon Singapore to achieve the No. 1 share and position in South & South East Asia region.

Dear Tutors and Students,

Hope you are all aware about the updates of Pathshala and ULAB process. We are still waiting for UGC’s approval and the agreement which to be signed by the top management of Pathshala and ULAB. We are expecting to start working with ULAB from this summer semester provided the green signal is received from the relevant authorities.

Considering the present improvement of Pathshala and ULAB process, we have brought some changes in the current academic schedule. The final examination for all our academic programmes (both day and evening session) will be held as per the following schedule:-
1. All regular classes will be continued up to the 10th of May 2008.

2. Every student will have to submit his/her class records, class assignments/practical
assignments (final) and portfolios/presentations assigned by your tutors by May
16, 2008 before 5.00pm. Any submission after this deadline may not be accepted.

3. Written examinations will be held from May 20 – 30, 2008. The written examination
schedule will be published on due time.

# 4. It is to be noted that your final grade will be based on your overall performance
throughout the academic year. Overall marks will be distributed as follows:
(a) Attendance and active participation (10 + 15) : 25%
(b) Class Assignments and Record keeping (20 + 10) : 30%

A session on global warming /climate change will be held on 27th February 2008 (6:00pm-8:00pm) at Pathshala. A French filmmaker named Morad Aït-Habbouche is now in Bangladesh working on Climate Change and the Advanced Diploma students of Pathshala have just finished their month long workshop/programme collaborating with Edith Cowan University, Australia. Therefore, related parties and Pathshala thought that it might be very effective to arrange a session to exchange thoughts and ideas between the filmmaker and Pathshala students.

We are sorry to give this formal announcement so late. This is because the filmmaker was engaged with his fieldwork and we couldn’t communicate much earlier.

CV of Morad Aït-Habbouche

Morad Aït-Habbouche was born on January 27th,1964 in Paris. He studies journalism at the UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY of Bordeaux. Very quickly, he becomes a reporter. Between 1997 and 2001, he covers many major conflicts throughout the world. Among those, he covers many international conflicts for the national edition of France 3, such as Afghanistan, Bosnia, Algeria, Somalia, Sierra Léone or Kosovo...
In 1998, he wins the AWARD FOR WAR CORRESPONDENTS for his report on the Congo war.
In 1996, 1997 and 1999, he obtains the trophy “Yeux D’Or” for his report on Bosnia and the criminal war.

During this period, he becomes chief editor of France 3’s national edition; a French channel; and realises TV magazines (Women in Iran, People of the Nile…)
Morad Aït Habbouche created the press agency “Elle est pas Belle la vie” in 2001. He produces and realises documentaries for French TV. However, the programs are broadcasted on international televisions as well.

Workshop on Photo-editing for Diploma Students

Hi All
Through the 'Photo Editing" workshop (schedule given bellow), you are expected to develop your 'Story Telling' ability through making a photo story. You will produce a story with a bunch of images on a particular subject, you will choose at first day, by the end of the workshop. You will learn Editing Techniques as a whole and edit of your own work as well as others. Sharing views with peer members is very important aspect of this workshop.
Students are requested to bring one idea in written form (not more than 200 words) on which she/he will make story during workshop.
By the end of the workshop each student will be able to present a photo story. These will be shown at the class and feedbacks will be provided at the final day.

Dear Teachers and Students,

We are pleased to announce that the Oslo University has finally confirmed the participation of six students and one teacher from Pathshala in the forthcoming international workshop that will be held in Oslo from the 28th of February – 10th of March 2008. Accordingly, Pathshala Selection Committee has selected six students from the 2nd and 3rd year students based on their previous academic performance, portfolio and gender (at least two female students as required by Oslo University).

The selected students are:

Debashish Kumar Shom is in the waiting list. Hasib Zakaria will be escorting this group of six students during their trip to Oslo.

Students not interested in attending the Oslo University International Workshop in March 2008 should, at once, inform the Pathshala administration.

The selected students should send their CV in soft with their names, passport numbers, sex, academic and professional background to Pathshala office within the 25th of January 2008 without fail. We will inform the selected students about their next step of action as early as possible.

You all will be pleased to know that Pathshala is going to celebrate its 9th anniversary this year. It started its journey on the 18^th of December in 1998. Accordingly, we were supposed to celebrate its anniversary on the 18^th but we have decided to observe it sometime in January 2008 in order to make it more memorable, effective and enjoyable. The celebration date will be announced very shortly.

The organizing committee has decided to go for a good print publication this time which will also enable us to use as a promotional tool of the institute in the coming days. A good news. An international workshop will be held at Oslo University College from the 3rd - 7th of March 2008. About 42 students from Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Pathshala will be participating in this workshop. Six students from Pathshala will
be selected for this programme.

All 2nd and 3rd year students of Pathshala are requested to submit your Portfolio in PRINT version latest by Thursday, the 15th of November 2007 at 3.00pm. No portfolio will be received after 3.00pm.
